New episodes of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will be available to stream the day after their broadcast on both Hulu and Peacock, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sony Pictures Television has struck a multi-year streaming deal with the platforms for streaming rights to the popular game shows, adding another layer to an ongoing legal battle over the series’ syndication rights.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces both game shows, sued distributor network CBS in October over an alleged breach of contract, arguing that CBS was purposefully undervaluing the programs to prioritize in-house productions to potential international buyers. The case itself has seen plenty of back and forth, with a California appellate panel of judges ruling last week that CBS could continue airing new episodes of both programs in the meanwhile.
While Sony Pictures Television is still obligated to deliver new episodes of Jeopardy! and Fortune to CBS for the time being, though, their contract with CBS doesn’t prevent them from shopping around the streaming rights to other distributors, paving the way for separate deals like the one The Hollywood Reporter announced Tuesday. This marks the first time that seasons of the long-running game shows will be available to stream while still premiering on cable, simplifying the process for fans. An unspecified number of episodes from past seasons will also be included in the streaming deal.
Sony Pictures Television chairman Keith Le Goy commented on the deal in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter: “We are thrilled to bring America’s favorite game shows to an even wider audience on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and Peacock. Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are two of the most successful game shows in television history, and we look forward to giving fans the best possible streaming access to our shows this fall.”
The deal is set to take effect when Jeopardy! begins its 42nd season and Wheel of Fortune begins its 43rd, per Variety. For now, though, fans can catch new episodes of both programs airing nightly on ABC.
