Hulu Not Moving Forward With Marvel Series ‘Ghost Rider’

Marvel’s Ghost Rider, expected to soon be developed into a live action series starring Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), has been cancelled by Hulu, according to Variety. The streaming service has decided to discontinue the series due to a creative impasse that could not be resolved.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star was to reprise the fan-favorite role in the ABC-Disney drama series. This would have been his second appearance as the antihero, Robbie Reyes.

Ghost Rider revolves around Reyes, who after being consumed by hellfire is supernaturally bound to a demon. He “lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, he brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.”

The series was one of the two live action Marvel dramas ordered to stream on Hulu. The other drama, Helstrom, comes from the same executive producers as Ghost Rider, Ingrid Escajeda (Justified), Paul Zbyszewski (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Lost) and Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb.

“Both shows were to exist in the same universe as Hulu sought to build an interconnected live-action Marvel universe similar to the original franchise at Netflix,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The news of the cancellation comes as Disney is preparing to launch their new streaming service, Disney+, in November. The platform is expected to feature a huge range of live-action original series with actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe; some of the scheduled series include Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, WandaVision with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, and Tom Hiddleston will be coming back as the fan-favorite God of Mischief in Loki. These shows are to be produced and supervised by Marvel’s film division.

Ghost Rider is also the third Marvel series to be discontinued, following Donald Glover’s animated Deadpool and Freeform’s New Warriors.
