Hulu Developing ‘Queen of Shadows’ Based on Popular ‘Throne of Glass’ Series

Instead of heading to the silver screen, the latest popular young adult book series is being adapted for the small screen.

Deadline reports that the bestselling Throne of Glass series by author Sarah J. Maas is currently being adapted for TV at Hulu. The series will take the title of the fourth book in the series and be called Queen of Shadows and hails from the Mark Gordon Company. Kira Snyder (The 100) will write the script and Anna Foerster (Underworld: Blood Wars) has been tapped to direct the pilot.

Throne of Glass follows Celaena Sardothien, a dangerous criminal who went from legendary assassin to lowly prisoner. Before Celaena can escape from prison where she is slowly dying, she gets an offer she cannot refuse. The prince offers her freedom in exchange for being his candidate for king’s champion. As an act of rebellion and cruel irony, the crown prince wants to make his father’s number one enemy his new champion. But in order to survive Celaena must fight against the kingdom’s most notable criminals and warriors, and there is an old, dark magic that has resurfaced.

Sarah J. Maas began chronicling the adventures of Celaena when she was still in high school. She was inspired to create the character while listening to the Cinderella soundtrack and wondering what the story would have been like if Cinderella hadn’t come to the ball to woo the prince but rather assassinate him. And thus her heroine was born.

Before Throne of Glass was published, Maas posted stories about Celaena online. After growing her fan-base, the author jumped from e-novellas to printed novels.

Maas’s bestselling series consists of Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows and Empire of Storms. The fifth book in the series was just released yesterday.

The series is still in the development stage, which means we will probably have to wait a while before the series will premiere on Hulu.
