Hulu Casts Chris Lowell Opposite Hilary Duff in ‘How I Met Your Father’ Series Spinoff of ‘How I Met Your Mother’

Hulu has cast Chris Lowell (GLOW) in the male lead role of How I Met Your Father, according to Deadline. Lowell will play opposite Hilary Duff (Younger) in the straight-to-series spinoff of the CBS hit comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Duff is set to play Sophie, a mother telling her son the story of how she met his father, according to Deadline. The story begins in the present day, when Sophie and her close friends are in their early adulthood, figuring out their lives and looking for love.

Lowell will portray Jesse, one of Sophie’s friends, who Deadline describes as “smart, with a bit of an edge and cynical about love. He’s an aspiring musician who works as an Uber driver to make ends meet and lives with his best friend Tom.”

The ten-episode sequel was created by Isaac Aptaker (This is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (Love, Victor), according to Deadline. Duff is on board as a producer of the series, alongside executive producers Carter Bays (American Dad!) and Craig Thomas (The Goodwin Games), who created How I Met Your Mother. They are joined by co-executive producer Adam Londy (Love, Victor).

The spinoff has had a long development period going back as far as 2014, when the original series aired its finale. Several pilots were written and rejected, including one starring Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird).

Lowell recently starred in the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman with Carey Mulligan. His television credits include Jenji Kohan’s Netflix dramedy GLOW, Graves, Enlisted and Private Practice.
