Hulu Cancels Comedy-Drama ‘The Great’ After Its Third Season

The Great first debuted in May of 2020. The third season of the series premiered three years later in May of 2023. According to Deadline, The Great will not be getting a fourth season as the series has been canceled by Hulu.

As Deadline notes, the reason for the cancellation has yet to be revealed.

The Great was created by Tony McNamara (Cruella 2, The Favourite), and it was based on a play of the same name he wrote in 2008.  McNamara also serves as the showrunner and executive producer of the series.

This comedy-drama series is set in the 18th century and revolves around the reign of Russia’s Catherine the Great. In history, Catherine the Great ruled from 1762 to 1796.

The show stars Elle Fanning (All the Bright Places, Maleficent) as Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult (The Menu, Skins) as Peter the Third. The third season of The Great focuses on the marriage between Catherine and Peter, which seems to be improving.

Both Fanning and Hoult have been recognized and nominated for Emmy awards due to their performances in The Great. In 2022, Fanning was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series while Hoult was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series. Additionally, in 2022, The Great won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Period Costumes.

Other stars of The Great include Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death) as Marial, Charity Wakefield (Mockingbird Lane, Day of the Flowers) as Georgina, Adam Godley (The Umbrella Academy, Suits) as Archbishop, Sebastian de Souza (Kids in Love, Recovery Road) as Leo, Gwilym Lee (A Song for Jenny, Bohemian Rhapsody) as Grigor, Belina Bromilow (Doctor Doctor, The Rage in Placid Lake) as Aunt Elizabeth and more.

Although the series has been canceled, fans can still stream all three seasons of The Great on Hulu.
