FX and Hulu will be teaming up to produce a new documentary as a new addition to The New York Times Presents series. According to Deadline, the new documentary will be set around the Janet Jackson Super Bowl scandal.
The film, titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, will premiere on FX and stream on Hulu on November 19. It will tell the story of the infamous 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show, in which Justin Timberlake exposed Jackson’s breasts on television. Jackson’s career failed to come back from the controversy, while Timberlake was able to continue his rise to stardom.
According to Deadline, the documentary will explore the racial and cultural implications that affected the situations, and how the scandal impacted the career of one of the biggest pop stars in history.
Jodi Gomes (The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty) will direct and produce the documentary. The film will include rare footage and interviews with several people who worked in the control room that night to retell the story of television’s most shocking event and how it shaped the culture going forward. The Times will also loop in new reporting, insights from the Jackson family, critics, and industry insiders, while also exploring the fallout and CBS head honcho Les Moonves’ role in the scandal.
Malfunction is not the only Janet Jackson documentary coming to television.JJackson herself will be producing documentary on Lifetime and A&E, which will explore her forty-year career in the music industry. The two-part documentary will premiere in January 2022.
The New York Times Presents previously made headlines this year with Framing Britney Spears, the documentary on the conservatorship of Britney Spears.
Malfunction will premiere on November 19 on Hulu and FX.
