‘How I Met Your Mother’ Spinoff Gets ‘This Is Us’ Writers

Truthfully, we’ve been down this road before.

After the series finale of How I Met Your Mother premiered to mixed audiences in 2014, there were rumblings of a spinoff. The tongue-in-cheek show How I Met Your Dad was created in 2014 under the supervision of How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (Emily Spivey also created the spinoff). The show starred Greta Gerwig (famous for Frances Ha) and had voice narration by Meg Ryan. Interestingly, the show was not picked up, despite the popularity of the original series.

The Hollywood Reporter now announces that another try at the spinoff is in the works at 20th TV. This new take–How I Met Your Father–will be penned by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who have recently been tugging on audiences’ heartstrings in This Is Us.

How I Met Your Father will still take on a similar pattern as the first spinoff, focusing on the female’s point of view, taking the mother through the same romantic and emotional pitfalls as How I Met Your Mother. Of course, the ending of the series will also feature how the mother met their eventual spouse.

While Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are serving as executive producers on the new spinoff, they are not expected to have a direct hand in the series. The pair have an overall deal at the competing studio Sony Television, thus limiting their involvement in the project.
