Hulu released the first trailer for How I Met Your Father, a spinoff sequel series of CBS’ original, How I Met Your Mother. The new comedy follows a young woman’s pursuit of love in the present day, as told by her future self to her young son. The series stars Hilary Duff (Cadet Kelly, Law and Order: SVU) and Kim Cattrall ( Sex and the City, Filthy Rich) as Sophie, both in the past and future. View the full trailer below.
Sometime in the far future, Cattrall’s Sophie narrates to her son and viewers how she found and fell in love with his father. These anecdotes are illustrated by Duff’s Sophie in 2022. Set against the New York skyline, Sophie and her friends will courageously explore dating in the modern world. Alongside Sophie is her best friend, Chris Lowell’s (Promising Young Woman, Private Practice) Jesse, who encourages her when she thinks she’s just about given up on the dating game.
The other cast members include Francia Raisa’s (grown-ish, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) Valentina, Tom Ainsley (Serpent, Safe Inside) as Charlie, Suraj Sharma (God Friended Me, The Illegal) as Sid, and Tein Tran (Hot Date, Work in Progress) plays Ellen. The supporting cast also includes Josh Peck (Drake & Josh, Hooch & Turner) – who we see Sophie eventually dating within the trailer – Ashley Reyes (Night Has Settled, First Girl I Loved), and Daniel Augustin (The Turnaround, Cake). Augustin replaced former cast member Brandon Michael Hall (Search Party, God Friended Me).
The original series, How I Met Your Mother, followed a similar premise with Josh Radnor’s (Liberal Arts, Hunters) character, Ted, relaying his love story to his future child. The hit sitcom ran on CBS from 2005 to 2014 and costarred Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Pie), Josh Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bad Teacher), Neil Patrick Harris (8-Bit Christmas, It’s A Sin), and Colbie Smulders (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Stumptown). Bob Saget (America’s Funniest Home Videos, Full House) narrated the series as future Ted.
Production was set to begin in August but was delayed following Duff testing positive for COVID-19. Luckily it appears the crew was able to resume filming and keep their early 2022 premiere date set.
How I Met Your Mother premieres on January 18 only on Hulu.
