The new Game Of Thrones prequel series House Of The Dragon has broken multiple viewing records of the British network Sky including the series becoming the network’s biggest U.S. drama launch as well as becoming the biggest Sky Atlantic series premiere in its 11-year history, as noted by Deadline. The prequel series premiered last month.
Zai Bennett, Sky’s MD Of Content, released a statement on House Of The Dragon’s early success.
“Momentum around House of the Dragon just continues to build, as more and more people spread the word about its ever-current narrative of political power play married with visuals of epic scale and imagination,” Bennett said, per Deadline. “And thanks to Sky making the first episode freely available to watch via YouTube, more people than ever before will be able to sample the world-class world of Westeros.”
According to Sky via Deadline, the show’s first episode has been watched by more than four million people on Sky, which beats the 2011 premiere of Game Of Thrones. The prequel’s four million viewers on Sky is close to the same numbers as shows such as Netflix’s Stranger Things and Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, according to U.K. ratings agency Barb via Deadline. On August 24th, House Of The Dragon became the most-watched TV or film premiere on HBO or HBO Max in Europe in the history of the network.
House Of The Dragon, which just released its third episode on Sunday and has already been renewed for a second season, recently underwent a major change with one of the prequel’s showrunners, Miguel Sapochnik (Finch), announcing that he would be leaving the series as a showrunner but remain an executive producer last week. The show’s co-creator and showrunner, Ryan Condal (Colony), will now serve as sole showrunner and Alan Taylor (The Many Saints Of Newark) has been hired as an additional executive producer. Taylor will also direct multiple episodes for the upcoming second season.
