Netflix confirms renewing House of Cards for a third season.
According to Deadline, this is the first official renewal for the Washington DC drama after it originally received a straight-to-series two-season order. Long negotiations took place regarding the third season of House of Cards.
“Our intent is that the show keeps going for sure,” Netflix’s Ted Sarandos said in October. “It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.”
The series is now a staple original Netflix series. This put Netflix on the original programming map and opened the door for creators and producers. Other original series that have fared well for the streaming service include Hemlock Grove and Orange Is The New Black, both received second season renewals. They are continuing negotiations for Arrested Development in the form of episodes or a movie.
Netflix made a $100 million commitment for House of Cards that raised eyebrows because it was one of the biggest gambles in recent TV history. They recently made another big commitment to four series and a miniseries from Marvel.
The second season of House of Cards premieres next week.
