The horror-comedy series Los Espookys begins its six-episode season on Friday, June 14 on HBO. A primarily Spanish-language show (with English subtitles), Los Espookys is set in a surreal Latin American country and centers on “a group of friends who turn their love for horror into a peculiar business.” Los Espookys was created by SNL’s Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega, who also star in the series. The SNL alums cooked up a unique premise for the series: Horror enthusiasts become professional spookers, using their peculiar passions to turn a profit.
The leader of Los Espookys is Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco), who runs a business that manufactures thrills for a variety of clients and “provides horror for those who need it.” Renaldo’s business is backed by his collection of unusual, horror genre-loving friends: Ursula (Cassandra Ciangherotti), “a calm and collected dental assistant who provides teeth for the group’s monsters,” Ursula’s sister Tati (Ana Fabrega), who acts as the group’s test dummy, blue-haired Andrés (Julio Torres), “the brooding heir to a chocolate empire,” and his gorgeous boyfriend Juan Carlos (José Pablo Minor). Fred Armisen will make occasional, guest-star appearances on the show as Tico (Fred Armisen), “Renaldo’s benign, beloved uncle, who is happily living his own career dream as a parking-valet legend in LA.”
The trailer for the brand-new series is filled with the crew’s bizarre, surreal business ventures. One of their spooks involves abducting an American ambassador and trapping her in a mirror. Another involves Andrés facing a sea creature underwater.
