Law & Order: Organized Crime will have Meloni reprising the role of Eliot Stabler, which he played for the first 12 seasons of Law & Order: SVU, the longest running primetime live action show in American Television history. The new spinoff series revolves around Stabler (Meloni) as he heads the New York organized crime division of the NYPD, paving the way for crossovers with his former partner iconic SVU’s Detective Olivia Benson played by Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order, ER).
Stabler (Meloni) returned to the Law & Order: SVU procedural in its season 22 beginning earlier this year to segway into the new series. Originally announced last summer to premiere in the Fall 2020 amidst the pandemic, the series was delayed. According to an interview with Meloni, last summer the series was due to air in October 2020 but because of many issues like Matt Olmstead, the showrunner exiting and of course pandemic related restrictions while filming delayed the premiere until 2021. According to Variety the new showrunner of the series will be Showtime’s hit The L Word series creator, Ilene Chaiken.
According to the report from THR not much is known of McDermott’s new role in the upcoming NBC drama. McDermott has most recently starred in Netflix’s hit series Hollywood. According to Thrillist, On instagram someone commented on Hollywood creator Ryan Murphy’s post “Are you planning a season 2 with the same cast? please say yes”. Murphy responded “Well HOLLYWOOD was planned as a limited series, but it’s become so popular that everyone is asking for another season. So who knows? I sure do love the cast though. Xo.” So there is no telling if McDermott is set to return. McDermott also periodically plays characters in Murphy’s anthology series American Horror Story.
Law & Order: Organized Crime is the newest of Dick Wolf’s expanded roster of scripted originals. Wolf has six scripted series currently in the works: NBC’s Law & Order: SVU, Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, CBS’ FBI and its spinoff FBI: Most Wanted. NBC last year also ordered straight to series live action spinoff L&O Hate Crimes, THR reports that the NBCU’s forthcoming Peacock my be the home for it.
Just a few days ago Hargitay posted a photo on Instagram of the iconic duo Benson (Hargitay) and Stabler (Meloni) back at work on set with the caption “ It’s happening….#OC #PFL” signaling that production is underway.
