The latest trailer of Marvel’s upcoming series, Wonder Man offers an insightful understanding and a first glimpse at the powers of the MCU’s newest hero, Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman, Aquaman). Reported by Screenrant, the plot of the series will focus on Williams, who is an actor hoping to land the main role in a titular reboot by a famous filmmaker. Wonder Man has been in production for several years and was originally scheduled for release in December 2025, but the release has been delayed due to reconstruction.
Stated by Screenrant, further into the trailer we see Simon having dinner with a returning character, in the form of Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley (Shutter island, Hugo). In a brief moment, we see that Simon lays his hand on the table which leads to the liquid in his glass visibly ripples and the whole table shakes. This is confirmation that Williams is manifesting comic book powers, which is ionic energy. Furthermore, the trailer ends on a comedic high note with Simon entering a building and having to sign a document to confirm that he does not possess superpowers. He reacts to this with a slight hesitation, but than chuckles and plainfully says ‘yeah’.
The upcoming series is often described as a Hollywood satire, meaning it will incorporate humor. According to Screenrant, in addition to Ben Kingsley and Williams, the cast will include Demetrius Grosse (The Rookie, Body Cam), who will play Simon’s brother, Eric, also known as the Grim Reaper in the comics. Arian Moayed (Ms. Marvel , Spider-Man: No Way Home) will reprise his role as agent P. Cleary.
This comedic approach of a hero in denial, blended with a classic origin story setup, positions Wonder Man as a refreshingly different entry into the MCU when it makes its debut on Disney+ on January 27.
