Netflix has the power! Or at the very least they have the rights because it’s been announced that they’re yet again teaming up with Mattel Television to produce an original CG animated adventure series that will reimagine He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the popular 1980’s toy-based franchise.
This project shouldn’t be confused with Netflix’s previously announced Mattel partnership on the 2D anime series Masters of the Universe: Revelation from filmmaker Kevin Smith. Rob David, who serves as executive producer for Smith’s show, is developing the new series for Netflix, as well as serving as executive producer. Other producers include Adam Bonnett (Descendants), Christopher Keenan (Justice League, Batman Beyond), Susan Corbin (Voltron) and Emmy-winning Jeff Matsuda (The Batman, TMNT.)
Fred Soulie, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Content Distribution and Business Development, said in statement, “Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base. The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them.”
Talks of the latest reboot are just the beginning of Mattel’s plans for the classic Masters of the Universe franchise, which is soon to also include a comic book series by DC Comics, a feature film, and a reimagining of the 1980s toy-line that will be available in Fall 2020.
Meanwhile, in other He-Man related news, Netflix has still yet to officially announce a fifth season of its widely popular She-Ra and the Princess of Power series, though all signs are pointing towards it happening very soon. She-Ra was originally produced in the 80’s and was a spinoff of a character of the same name from none other than He-Man himself. So, does this mean that fans can look forward to a crossover meeting of these two iconic characters? Time will have to tell as the He-Man reboot has yet to receive an official release date, though it has been confirmed.
