HBO’s new drama titled True Detective, drew in the highest ratings for a series premiere since Boardwalk Empire in 2010, as noted by The Wrap. True Detective stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two detectives who are drawn into a murder investigation. The first season consists of eight episodes.
Even though the premiere drew 2.3 million total viewers, that was considerably fewer that what the ratings for Boardwalk Empire were (4.8 million total viewers). A replay of the True Detective premiere grabbed another million viewers. The drama also beat out the recent series premieres for Game of Thrones (2.2 million total viewers) and The Newsroom (2.1 million total viewers).
Meanwhile, Girls returned with the third season which had 1.1 million total viewers. After the replay, the series premiere drew a total of 1.6 million viewers.
The second episode of True Detective will air on Sunday, January 19 on HBO.
