Actress Judy Greer (Kidding, Ant-Man) is headed back to 1970’s Washington D.C. TVLine reports Greer is the latest to join HBO’s The White House Plumbers. The limited series will explore the architects – and ultimate saboteurs – of the Watergate scandal that occurred during President Richard Nixon’s tenure.
According to TVLine, Greer will play Fran Liddy, the wife of Justin Theroux’s (The Leftovers, Mosquito Coast) G. Gordon Liddy. As much as Fran loves her husband, she has little confidence in his political aspirations. Greer joins Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Milkshake Gunpowder) as Dorothy Hunt, the wife of Liddy’s counterpart, E. Howard Hunt. Hunt will be played by Woody Harrelson (Zombieland 2: Double Tap, Venom: Let There Be Carnage).
The five-part limited series chronicles the very men, specifically Hunt and Giddy, who orchestrated the alleged wiretapping at the Democratic convention which led to Nixon’s resignation, according to TVLine. The show is partially based on the 2007 book, Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons From the White House, written by Egil “Bud” Krogh and his son, Matthew Krogh. The elder Krogh, who passed in 2020, was a lawyer within Nixon’s administration who served time for his part in the Watergate scandal.
TVLine reports this is the second time this story has been told on screen. In 1982, a TV movie titled, Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy, aired on NBC. Giddy and his wife were played by Robert Conrad (The Wild Wild West, Hard Knox) and Katherine Cannon (Beverly Hills, 90210, Hawaii Five-O), respectively.
According to TVLine’s sister site Deadline, the series is created by writers Alex Gregory (Veep, King of the Hill) and Peter Huyck (What Men Want, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy). The duo will serve as executive producers along with David Mandel (EuroTrip, The Dictator) and Frank Rich (Ghost Light: A Memoir, Becoming Mike Nichols).
Greer is also set to appear in another political period series. According to Deadline, she is set to play Nancy Howe in Showtime’s tentatively-titled drama series, The First Lady. The anthology series is set to explore the White House from the eyes of America’s various presidential wives. Howe was secretary and close friend of Betty Ford, wife to Gerald Ford. Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit, What Lies Beneath) is set to play Betty while Aaron Eckhart (Batman: The Dark Knight, Thank You For Smoking) has been cast as the 38th president.
