Per a Warner Bros. Discovery press release, The Sympathizer‘s premiere date has been announced. The seven-episode series is set to debut on Sunday, April 14th.
Per the logline: “Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.”
The series stars Kieu Chinh (NCIS: Los Angeles, The Joy Luck Club), Ky Duyen (The Rich Woman, A Lone Lost Soul), Fred Nguyen Khan (Transplant, Blood & Treasure), Toan Le (Bigfoot, Bullets, Blood & Fistful of Ca$h), Vy Le (You Have a Nice Flight, The Vanishing Princess), Duy Nguyen (The Night Logan Woke Up, Ghosts), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Sideways), Phanxine, Alan Trong (The Tomorrow War, Alita: Battle Angel) and Hoa Xuande (Last King of the Cross, Cowboy Bebop).
Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Chaplin) has been cast to play multiple roles.
Don McKellar (Last Night, Blindness) and Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) both serve as co-showrunners as well as executive producers and writers.
Executive producers are Amanda Burrell (Sweet Tooth, Perry Mason), Downey Jr. and Susan Downey (RocknRolla, Sherlock Holmes) under the Team Downey banner. Jisun Back (Snowpiercer, Confession), Kim Ly (Rise, Antiviral), Nguyen and Ron Schmidt (House of the Dragon, Watchmen) under the Moho Film banner. A24 also produces.
The series directors are Chan-wook for episodes one through three. Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, Blindness) directed episode four, and Marc Munden (Utopia, Help) directed episodes five through seven. Series writers are Tea Ho (Murder Time, We Were the Lucky Ones), Maegan Houang (Counterpart, In Full Bloom) Naomi Iizuka (The Terror, Bosch: Legacy), Anchuli Felicia King (The Twelve, The Baby) and Mark Richard (The Good Lord Bird, The Man in the High Castle).
The Sympathizer is a co-production between HBO, A24, Rhombus Media, Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
