The HBO drama series created by Grammy winner The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson (Euphoria) has officially received a series order, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Idol will star The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp (The King, Troye Sivan (Boy Erased), Nico Hiraga (Moxie), Elizabeth Berkley Lauren (Showgirls), and most recently, Suzanna Son (Red Rocket).
The series, having been in development since the summer, is set in Los Angeles and centers around the music industry. Specifically, the show follows a self-help guru and cult leader who develops a relationship with a pop singer. Details of each castmember’s role have not yet been released. All six episodes of the series will be directed by Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience), while Tesfaye, Fahim, Levinson, and Joe Epstein (Space Opera) will write and executive produce. The singer indirectly announced the show’s series order through an ominous Instagram post.
“When the multitalented Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear their subversive, revelatory take on the cult of the music industry was unlike anything HBO had ever done before,” HBO Programming Executive Vice President, Francesca Orsi, said, via The Hollywood Reporter. “Shortly after, the brilliant duo of Joe Epstein and Amy Seimetz joined forces with the rest of the team, and this dream became a reality.”
