HBO’s ‘The Batman’ Filmmaker Matt Reeves Shares That He Has “Evolved Plans” For Future Spinoffs

The Penguin, the new DC series, was released on Max and HBO this week, continuing the story that began in 2020’s The Batman. The series will continue the same story in the next movie The Batman Part II, but it is not the only spinoff planned. There are rumors about one centered on Arkham Asylum, or Gotham Police Department, but no official confirmation exists. In an exclusive interview with EW, The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Lift) shared that there are other “evolved versions” of these ideas, Comicbook.com reports.

“The things that we’re talking about [now] are evolved versions of those things,” Reeves explained via Comicbook.com. “It’s not like that just didn’t work. It was like, we need to evolve this. I would describe it less as something that didn’t work and more as something that is still along a path toward arriving at its destination.”

According to Comicbook.com,  The Penguin‘s storyline will connect with the upcoming movie The Batman Part II. Reeves has shared previously that the series will set up the story of The Batman sequel and is “absolutely connected to where we leave things in the series.”

“There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters the world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case,” Reeves said via Comicbook.com.

However, according to Comicbook.com, there is no confirmation that Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Remember Me)  will appear in the series. Reeves has shared previously that Pattinson will not be making a cameo.

“Rob is not going to be in the show. I’d rather take the band-aid off now. We did talk about all that, but we felt the best way to do this was to go on a grand exploration of a guy grabbing for power in this moment,” Reeves explained via Comicbook.com.

The Penguin‘s cast includes Colin Farrell (The Gentlemen, The Lobster) as Oz Cobb, Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Masel, The Stand In) as Alberto Falcone, Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs, How I Met Your Mother) as Sofia Falcone, and Clancy Brown (Dexter: New Blood, Gen V) as Salvatore Maroni.

The Penguin is now available on Max and HBO, and it will air every Sunday on HBO starting Sept. 29. The Batman Part II is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2026.
