According to Deadline, HBO’s Succession has made Emmy history by having three actors in the series nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. This is the first time three actors from the same series have been nominated in the Lead Actor category simultaneously.
The actors nominated include Jeremy Strong (Zero Dark Thirty, The Big Short), Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, She’s All That), and Brian Cox (The Independent, Mending the Line).
Strong and Cox have both previously been nominated for Lead Actor twice in 2020 and 2021, with Strong winning in 2020.
This is Culkin’s first nomination for Lead Actor, however he has been nominated for Supporting Actor twice in the past. In 2022, he competed against Nicholas Braun (Sky High, Minutemen) and Matthew Macfadyen (The Last Kingdom, Pride & Prejudice).
Succession has already received 13 Emmy awards. The series won Best Drama Series for season two and season three. It has gotten 27 nominations for the fourth and final season, including 14 acting nominations and Outstanding Drama Series. Creator Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show, Fresh Meat) was recognized for writing the episode “Connor’s Wedding”. Mark Mylod (The Menu, What’s Your Number?), Andrij Parekh (The Catcher Was a Spy, The Zookeeper’s Wife), and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers, The Meddler) were all nominated for directing.
There have only been a couple of other instances of three actors being nominated for the same series in one year and all were in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series field. Bea Arthur (Maude, All in the Family), Betty White (Hot in Cleveland, The Proposal), and Rue McClanahan (The Golden Palace, Another World) all were nominated for The Golden Girls from 1986-89, with each one of them winning once. Felicity Huffman (The X-Files, Big Game), Marcia Cross (Everwood, Knots Landing), and Teri Hatcher (MacGyver, Seinfeld) all were nominated for Desperate Housewives in 2005.
