Fans of Stephen King’s (Misery, The Shining) classic, It, can prepare themselves for the next chapter of the horror franchise. HBO released the official trailer and premiere date for It: Welcome to Derry, the prequel series exploring Pennywise’s origins in a small Maine town. View the trailer below courtesy of the WBD press release.
Set in 1962, we follow a Black family that’s recently uprooted to the town of Derry. While they face unscrupulous behavior from some bigoted neighbors, a darker secret lies beneath the surface of the idyllic small town. Something is responsible for a string of child killings, and it remains hungry for more.
An expansion on the rebooted It universe created in Andy Muschietti’s 2017 and 2019 feature films, Welcome to Derry stars Jovan Adepo (Fences, Watchmen), Taylour Paige (Zola, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason, Shining Girls), James Remar (Dexter: Resurrection, Transformers One), Stephen Rider (FBI: Most Wanted, Daredevil), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge, 12 Monkeys) and Rudy Mancuso (Tempo, The Flash). And Bill Skarsgard (Dead Man’s Wire, Locked) will reprise his film role as the hauntingly murderous Pennywise.
According to the press release, Andy and Barbara Muschietti (It: Chapter Two, The Flash) helm the series with Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Argylle) penning the first episode. Andy will direct multiple episodes.
Produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, Welcome to Derry is executive-produced by Andy and Barbara’s Double Dream production team, along with Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice, Warrior), Skarsgard, Roy Lee (Weapons, The Long Walk), Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Walker), David Coatsworth (Westworld, John Adams) and Shelley Meals (Shadow and Bone, See). Fuchs and Kane are the series showrunners.
The series was first announced in development in 2022 and was picked up as a series the next year. Originally an HBO Max title, the series has shifted to an HBO original, with plans for a multi-season run.
It: Welcome to Derry premieres on Sunday, October 26, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. The eight-episode first season will wrap on Sunday, December 14. For those who need an earlier fix, the series will be at New York Comic Con, October 9th-12th. And, the original miniseries starring Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jackie’s Back) and both It and It: Chapter Two are available on HBO Max.
