Based on novellas written by A Song of Fire and Ice scribe George R. R. Martin, the show received a series order in April 2023. Originally titled Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, the series follows the knight and his squire years before the events of the mothership series. The show follows Ser Duncan the Tall aka Dunk and his squire, Egg, as they traverse Westeros on various adventures and side quests.

Last year, the two main characters were cast: Peter Claffey portraying Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg.
