Blackout Room, HBO’s forthcoming mystery thriller drama, is set to be executive produced by the co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, Superhero Movie), according to Deadline. Furthermore, Edson Oda (Nine Days, Malaria) is set to write, executive produce, and direct. Additional executive producers include Jacqueline Lesko (Chernobyl, The Last of Us) and Cecil O’Connor (The Last of Us, Jurassic World: Dominion).
Deadline writes that Mazin, under his overall HBO deal, also has been building a development slate. He is now the only showrunner of critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic series The Last of Us following the departure of Neil Druckmann back in July. The series’ recent second season earned 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. A third season focused on Kaitlyn Dever’s (Last Man Standing, Apple Cider Vinegar) Abby is in the works, according to an article on mxdwn.
According to Deadline, Edson Oda is primarily known for being the director and writer of Nine Days, which was his feature film debut. Premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, it earned Oda the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Starring Winston Duke (Black Panther, Us), Nine Days was also nominated for Best First Feature at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards. Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: No Way Home) was also nominated for Best Supporting Male in the film.
Besides working on Blackout Room, Mazin, Lesko, and O’Connor are executive producing another HBO series project, Deadline notes. Created by Celine Song (Past Lives, Materialists), Damage is a forthcoming series surrounding competitive E-Sports.
The high-concept mystery thriller drama Blackout Room takes place in a near dystopian future. In a world where every second of every person’s life is constantly streamed to everyone else on the planet, one woman becomes the center of international attention after the sudden disappearance of her son, Deadline writes.
