According to Deadline, there will not be a fifth season of the HBO comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show. The fourth season, which wrapped in May, will be the final season of the series.
A Black Lady Sketch Show is created, written, and executive produced by Robin Thede (Haute Dog, The Rundown with Robin Thede). The series stars Thede, Ashley Nicole Black (Bob’s Burgers, Tab Time), Skye Townsend (Chase, Playin’ for Love), Gabrielle Dennis (The Big Door Prize, Blue Mountain State), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, Cars on the Road), Laci Mosley (Lopez vs Lopez, iCarly), and Issa Rae (Insecure, Awkward Black Girl).
In a statement, according to Deadline, HBO described Thede as “a visionary comedic talent,” and stated, “for four exceptional seasons of A Black Lady Sketch Show we’ve been thrilled to partner with her on this groundbreaking, hilarious series. Robin, alongside Hoorae, Jax Media, and the incredible cast and crew, leave an indelible legacy not only in sketch, but in television comedy, and we look forward to continued creative collaboration under her deal with us.”
Also according to Deadline, Thede said, “Thank you to all the immensely talented cast members, guest stars, writers, directors, editors and crew members who have made A Black Lady Sketch Show an Emmy-winning success. I especially want to recognize the Black women and other women of color who excelled in every department at ABLSS. I am also eternally grateful for the support of Issa Rae and Jax Media, Amy Gravitt, Casey Bloys and the entire team at HBO, Max, and Warner Bros. Discovery.”
Along with Thede, A Black Lady Sketch Show is executive produced by Rae, Jonathan Berry (Spring, Happy Together), Brooke Posch (Broad City, Difficult People), Tony Hernandez (Younger, Russian Doll), and Dave Becky (Rough Night, Paper Tiger).
Deadline reports that Thede and HBO mutually decided to end the series after the creative high note of season four.
