The long-awaited prequel series of HBO’s Game of Thrones, based on the A Song of Ice and Fire books from renowned author George R. R. Martin, has just released its official trailer. According to Deadline, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered its trailer earlier today at a panel during New York Comic Con. View the trailer below.
The series is set 100 years before the start of the events of Game of Thrones, during the reign of the Targaryens, but after the events of the Dance of the Dragons featured in House of the Dragon, where the Targaryens, though weaker than centuries before, are still strong, and people have not yet forgotten when dragons lived. The show is based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas and is expected to drop on January 18th, 2026, following its previous drop of new key visuals in anticipation of today’s reveal trailer.
The story will follow the characters of Sir Duncan the Tall when he was a hedge knight (Hedge Knights are people who have not been officially knighted by any lord, and serve more as sellwords traveling the roads looking for work but have similar stylings to an official knight, however as per their title entails they tend to sleep on the road and are tied to no land, title or lord.), and his friend, Egg, who wants to be the hedge knight`s squire. They will journey through Westeros, taking on jousting tournaments, new exploits, and showing the seven kingdoms of Westeros from a new perspective, rather than from on high with the mighty lords, ladies, and kings. But rather from below, from the point of view of everyday people, as this lowly hedgeknight tries to do right in this world.
According to the shows press release, the show`s logline is said to be : “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
The series is to be headed by Co-leads Peter Claffey (Vikings Valhalla, Small Things Like These) as Ser Duncan, and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Midwich Cuckoos, The Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes) as Aegon Targaryen or “Egg”, along with other stars in the cast such as Henry Ashton (My Lady Jane, Outlander) as Daeron Targaryen, Sam Spruell (Fargo, Legend) as Maekar the first, Danny Web (Alien 3, RobinHood) as Ser Arlan of PennyTree, Finn Bennet (Warfare, Hope Gap) as Aerion Targaryen, and Tanzyn Crawford (Servant, Swift Street) as Tanselle.
GRRM revealed in his blog post recently that this story will be shorter than House of the Dragon and will have a much different tone, within the worldbuilding of the show, but clarified that: “it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.”
However, no matter how you slice it, it appears that there is a lot of hype and anticipation from fans of GRRM`s work and lovers of Westeros, who have been hungry for more from the setting since the conclusion of season two of House of the Dragon, and now their wait begins for January the 18th, 2026 to arrive.
