Four episodes into its initial run, HBO has announced that its new comedy series, Avenue 5, to be renewed for a second season. HBO has had a successful run of successful programs dating back to the prison drama Oz and most recently the fantasy drama Game of Thrones which encapsulated audiences across the world. From the mind of the Veep creator, Armando Iannucci introduced the world to his sci-fi comedy this January led by House star Hugh Laurie. The comedy follows Hugh Laurie’s character, the captain of a space cruise ship, who encounters an interstellar emergency and the problems that arise between the various passengers and crew.
Iannucci gained stardom for his success with his creation of the political comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep. The show best remembered for the quick wits of the ensemble cast, as well as dealing with serious political issues with a sardonic overtone. Ianucci has transitioned this form of comedy to the confined corners of a space ship, particularly with the help of accomplished comedy actors. The show includes Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf in the Frozen films, in addition to Zach Woods, a fan favorite on HBO’s Silicon Valley and known for his supporting role in the later seasons of The Office. In addition to HBO’s other established comedies in the revival of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Barry, hopes are high for the future of the new futuristic comedy produced by Ianucci himself.
In the past, HBO has attempted to push other comedies on its network to little fanfare such as the political comedy, The Brink, and the Danny McBride-led Vice Principals. With the announcement of renewal for Avenue 5, the future prospect of the series has many to believe that the comedy has the potential to reach the heights of past HBO comedies like Veep and Eastbound & Down. With only four episodes out, there’s still a chance to binge the series on HBO GO before the series finale in a couple of weeks. Check out the trailer below:
