HBO has released the official trailer for Youth, its upcoming comedy series starring Sharon Horgan (This Way Up, Game Night, Pulling). According to Deadline, the series follows Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee navigating sex, love, aging and family responsibilities.
Horgan stars as Alex, who is struggling with getting older while also caring for her ailing parents and parenting her adult son. The trailer opens with a doctor, played by Alice Lowe (Hot Fuzz, Sightseers, Out There), telling Alex that she has arthritis in her lower jaw. The diagnosis quickly becomes the setup for a joke about how aging could be affecting her sex life, setting the tone for the comedy.
The series explores Alex’s attempts to maintain a romantic and sexual life while dealing with the pressures that come with getting older. According to the official description, she is searching for love and connection while juggling the needs of her parents and her son, who is old enough to be independent but still remains part of her daily responsibilities.
Rupert Friend (The Death of Stalin, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Young Victoria) stars as Patrick, while Sharlene Whyte (Burnside, We Hunt Together, Number One Fan) portrays Sam. Aran Murphy (Lola, War, Klara and the Sun) plays Ruari, and Robbie Gee (Snatch, Underworld, Paddington 2) stars as Frank.
Written and executive produced by Horgan, Youth continues her work in character-driven comedy centered on relationships, family and the complications of adulthood. Horgan also stars in the series, making the project one of several in which she serves both in front of and behind the camera.
The series is produced by Merman, the production company behind Amandaland, Bad Sisters and Vladimir. Horgan executive produces alongside Faye Dorn (Bad Sisters, The Shadow Line, Fortitude), Jim Kleverweis (Insecure, Silicon Valley, Groundhog Day) and Dawn Shadforth (Trust, Apples Never Fall, Adult Material), who also directs.
Youth premieres September 20 on HBO with its first two episodes and will also stream on HBO Max.
