HBO has announced the premiere date for its limited series drama, The Gilded Age, from Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes. According to Deadline, the period drama will bow on the network Monday, January 24 at 9 p.m. This announcement was paired with a teaser trailer. Check the trailer out below.
Set in 1882, the nine-part series will follow Marian Brook and her immersion into high society New York City at the brink of a cultural and economical shift in the United States, via Deadline. Following the death of her Union general father, Marian leaves her rural Pennsylvania life to reside with her two wealthy aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. As the fish in an entirely different ocean, Marian will find herself engulfed in the social war between one of her aunts – a product of old ways and money – and the new money couple who live next door, George and Bertha Russell.
Louisa Jacobson (Native Son, Romeo and Juliet) will make her television debut in the role of Marian. The Good Fight’s Christina Baranski and Ratched‘s Cynthia Nixon will portray her two aunts, Agnes and Ada, respectively. The Russells will be played by Morgan Spector (The Plot Against America, Pearson) and a recast, Carrie Coon (Avengers: Endgame, Widows). Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story, The Final Girls) and Harry Richardson (Dunkirk, Looking for Grace) have been cast as the Russells’ children, Gladys and Larry, respectively.
The show’s other cast members include Denée Benton (UnREAL, Hamilton) as Marian’s friend, Peggy Scott; Blake Ritson (Bricks, Krypton) as Agens’ son, Oscar van Rhijin; Simon Jones (Club Paradise, The Devil’s Own) as Bannister, the Rhijin’s butler; Thomas Cocquerel (The 100, Walk Right In) as lawyer Tom Raikes; and, Jack Gilpin (Law & Order, Kate & Allie) as the Russell family’s butler, Church.
Deadline reports Fellowes will executive produce with series directors Salli Richardson-Whitefield (Eureka, I Am Legend) and Michael Engler (The Chaperone, Downton Abbey). Additional producers include David Crockett (Captive State, Seven Pounds) and Gareth Neame (Turks & Caicos, The Woman in White). Sonja Warfield (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Will & Grace) is attached as a writer with Fellowes. HBO and Universal Television will produce the series.
Originally set to air on NBC in 2018, The Gilded Age was picked up by HBO the following year, according to Deadline. During production earlier this year, the network found itself at the center of an unfair labor lawsuit from the American Federation of Musicians. As of May, tentative deal had been reached, via the Times-Union.
