Cartoon Network’s animated show, Adventure Time is being picked up by HBO. The announcement comes just a year after the shows end back in 2018.
The ending of the show had marked milestone, for the “cult-hit” show after being on the network for 10 long seasons and launching the first season of the show in 2010 with creator Pendleton Ward and writers Adam Muto and Patrick McHale. The premise of the show follows the adventures of main characters and best friends Finn the Human and Jake the Dog as they travel through different realms in the Land of Ooo, where the main parts of the series takes place, as they go on dozens of magical adventures into these various lands meeting and getting to know new magically diverse cultures and kingdoms.
HBO was interested with the show because the studio felt that families and fans of the show should be able to continue to enjoy and learn from the vast quests that the characters and storylines bring to audiences. Although, it is unclear whether or not HBO will decide to pick up the show for more seasons, HBO has arranged for four new special episodes that will be an hour long as opposed to their half-an-hour time. These are set to debut on HBO Max’s streaming service along with many programs including Little Ellen and Sesame Street.
Under the series title, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, the show will feature the classic Adventure Time characters: Finn the human (Jeremy Shada), Jake the dog (John Dimaggio), Marceline (Olivia Olsen), Ice King (Tom Kenny) and Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch) and many more. The overall storyline this season based on the episode titles “BMO”, “Obsidian”, “Wizard City”, and “Together Again” and their summaries (more information can be found on an article from The Hollywood Reporter), are focusing specifically on character storylines and the reawakening of the relationships that these characters have with each other, possibly acting as a last hurrah.
The first two episodes of the special series are planned on being debuted sometime in the 2020 year on the HBO Max streaming service while dates for the other two episodes have yet to be determined. With the revival of the Adventure Time series the show could help bring in viewership to the HBO streaming service as the heat from the upcoming competiveness of the “streaming wars” is being dominated my major companies like Netflix, Hulu, Apple, Disney, and Amazon.
