A new entry to HBO’s thriller crime anthology series, True Detective, has been ordered by the network, according to an HBO press release. Season four, entitled True Detective: Night Country, has set Jodie Foster as the lead. Foster will be joined by upcoming actress Kali Reis of Catch the Fair One fame. It will be the first season not penned by creator Nic Pizzolatto (Gavelston, The Guilty).
The new season finds Foster and Reis as detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro tasked with solving the disappearance of a six-man team stationed at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Alaska. As the nights grow longer, the duo will have to search their own darkness in addition to the secrets hidden deep beneath the arctic ice.
True Detective first premiered in 2014 with each season following detectives investigating a heinous crime while struggling with their own inner demons. The initial season starred Matthew McConaughey (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Mud) and Woody Harrelson (Man from Toronto, The White House Plumbers) as two Lousiana detectives revisiting a 17-year-old cold case. The second season in 2015 shifted to California and starred trio Colin Farrell (The Batman, After Yang), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, John Carter), and Rachel McAdams (Red Eye, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) investigating a larger conspiracy after the disappearance of a city manager. A third season premiered in 2019 with Mahersala Ali (Marvel’s Blade, Ramy) and Stephen Dorff (Deputy, Blade) haunted by a traumatic case that changed their lives forever.
Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, made a statement about the series’ return.
“We are tremendously excited to return to the ‘True Detective’ franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for her ‘Night Country’ installment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles.”
According to the press release, Issa Lopez (Side Effects, Road to Fame) is set as the showrunner of the series. Lopez will also write, direct, and executive produces along with writer and executive producer, Alan Page Arriaga (Fear the Walking Dead, Babel). Additional executive producers include McConaughey, Harrelson, and Pizzolatto. They are joined by Anonymous Content, Mari Jo Winkler (Away We Go, Fair Game), and Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die, Beasts of No Nation). Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins is joined by PASTEL’s Adele Romanski (Leave Me Like You Found Me, Kicks) and Mark Ceryak (Never Rarely Sometimes Always, If Beale Street Could Talk) as executive producers as well.
Reis’ acting debut in 2021’s Catch the Fair One earned her critical acclaim including a nomination for Best Lead Actress at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. She will soon be seen opposite Sean Penn (Gastlit, Mystic River) and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One, Voyagers) in Jean-Stêphane Sauvaire’s (Johnny Mad Dog, Punk) Black Flies.
