According to an official Max press release, HBO has been given a straight-to-series order to Lanterns in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television. Based on the DC comic Green Lantern, the newly greenlit series will consist of eight episodes. The official logline can be read below.
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Casey Bloys (Less Than Perfect), Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, elaborated on the team behind the series. “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country) and Damon Lindelof (Watchment, The Leftovers) as they partner with Tom [King] (Mr. Miracle, Supergirl) for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James [Gunn] (The Suicide Squad, Guardians Of The Galaxy) and Peter [Safran] (Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, Shazam: Fury Of The Gods) vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”
Gunn and Safran also expressed excitement about bringing the series to the screen. “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”
Mundy serves as the show’s executive producer and showrunner. Lindelof and King will co-write the series with Mundy.
The last time Green Lantern was adapted for the screen was in 2011, starring Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Free Guy). Despite the intention to make it the start of the now-scrapped DC universe, negative reviews and a disappointing box office return led Warner Brothers to scrap this plan and begin the universe with Man of Steel.
