HBO Max’s ‘Our Flag Means Death’ With Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi Announces Release Date, Drops Trailer

Rhys Darby (Yes Man) and Taika Waititi’s (Jojo Rabbit) new comedy, Our Flag Means Death, has announced the pirate parody will release on HBO Max on March 3rd. according to IndieWire. The show is created by David Jenkins (People of Earth) and has also released a new trailer.

According to IndieWire, HBO Max will release multiple episodes of Our Flag Means Death at a time. Three episodes will debut on March, followed by three more episodes on March 10th, two more episodes on March 17th, and will then wrap their first season with two more episodes on March 24th.

The comedy series is loosely based on the true stories of Stede Bonnet, played by Darby. Bonnet becomes the captain of the pirate ship, Revenge. He has trouble gaining the respect of his crew until he has a run-in with Captain Blackbeard, played by Waititi, who then assists Bonnet in surviving the seas.

Jenkins discussed Waititi’s character and why he was selected for the role.

“Our Blackbeard is a legend, a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic soul, and quite possibly insane,” Jenkins said, per IndieWire. “Only one man could play this role, and that is the great Taika Waititi. We’re thrilled beyond measure he’s decided to don the beard.”

Waititi directs the first episode of Our Flag Means Death. The show also stars Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Nat Faxon (The Way Way Back), and Samba Schutte (Sunnyside) alongside Darby and Waititi. 

The trailer also includes appearances from multiple names including Nathan Foad (Bloods), Samson Kayo (Time Wasters), Vico Ortiz (American Horror Story), Ewen Bremner (Wonder Woman), Joel Fry (Yesterday), Matt Maher (Captain Marvel), Kristian Nairn (Game Of Thrones), Con O’Neill (Chernobyl), Guz Khan (Turn Up Charlie), David Fane (The Tattooist), and Rory Kinnear (The Imitation Game).

 Jenkins, Garrett Basch (The Night Of), and Dan Halsted (Garden State) are all executive producers for the series.
