The Eat. Bang. Kill! Tour may make a second round as HBO Max has renewed Harley Quinn, the adult animated DC Comics series starring Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory), for a fourth season, according to Deadline. The show originated on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming platform before premiering season three on HBO Max.
“Three seasons down and I can’t even begin to think about the new levels of chaos and trouble that Harley, Ivy and the gang can get into with a fourth season,” Peter Girardi, EVP for Alternative Programming, stated via Deadline. But I’m grateful to our partners at HBO Max for continuing this insane ride with us so we can all find out,”
The show follows Cuoco as the infamous Harley Quinn, former sidekick and girlfriend to Gotham City’s favorite anarchist, the Joker. After tiring of her toxic relationship with Mr. J, Harley decides to break out on her own to become Gotham’s biggest bad. She organizes her own crew and finds a confidant in her best friend, Poison Ivy, voiced by Lake Bell (Marvel’s What If…?).
Season three, which ends its run on September 15, has Harley and Ivy, now lovers, returning from their honeymoon. As they settle into the reality of married villain life, they discover they have much more to learn about one another. According to Deadline, Cuoco and Bell are joined by JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Ron Funches (Loot), and Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien) as Fank the Plant, King Shark, and Clayface, respectively. Additional cast members include James Adomian (Close Enough), Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show), Briana Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Andy Daly (Semi-Pro), Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows), Sanaa Lathan (On the Come Up), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Organized Crime), and Matt Oberg (Ugly Americans).
In addition to the new season, the series has gained Sarah Peters (Master of None), a series writer and consulting producer, as showrunner, via Deadline. Current showrunners Justin Halpern (Sh*t My Dad Says) and Patrick Schumacker (Suriving Jack) expressed their excitement for the new story and Peters’ new role.
“We are ecstatic that HBO Max wants the story of Harley and Ivy to continue,” Halpern and Schumacker stated via Deadline. “And we are equally thrilled that this next season will be in great hands with Sarah Peters as our showrunner and Ceci Aranovich overseeing animation production, as they have both greatly influenced the show with their brilliance since the beginning.”
Fans of the series were hesitant if another season would be greenlighted after HBO Max’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, made severe cuts across the streaming service. Some of the major projects canceled under the DC brand included the Batgirl film starring Leslie Grace (In the Heights), and the Batman: Caped Crusader animated series which reunited creators of the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, via Deadline.
Deadline lists the series is produced by WB Animation along with Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions and Yes, Norman Productions. Cuoco, Halpern, Schumacker, and Peters are all executive producers. They’re joined by additional executive producers Jessica Goldstein (Great News), Chrissy Pietrosh (Big Day), and Sam Register (Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi).
“Patrick Schumacker, Justin Halpern and their incredible team of artists and writers have created something so explosively funny and original,” SVP Comedy & Animation at HBO Max, Billy Wee, told Deadline, “and we are thrilled to continue this journey with them and the show’s legion of fans. It has been amazing to watch the show grow and evolve this season and we could not ask for a more talented and dedicated team of collaborators.”
All episodes of Harley Quinn are available to stream on HBO Max.
