HBO Max has revealed their first look at their brand-new animated series Aquaman: King of Atlantis, according to ComicBook. After Aquaman’s standalone film grossed over a billion dollars, DC fans have started to see the King of The Seas in a new light. This series will revolve around Arthur as he fights injustice and protects Atlanteans from sinister forces like his half-brother Orm. Check out HBO Max’s sneak peek below:
The series is classified as a miniseries and will have a younger target audience according to HBO Max’s head of original content Sarah Aubrey. “On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming,” Aubrey stated according to ComicBook. The animation for the series will be slightly different than most of the DC animated shows audience have seen.
Aquaman was created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris in 1941. He first appeared in More Fun Comics which eventually became roped in with what fans know today as DC comics. Aquaman’s secret identity Arthur Curry is the true heir to the Atlantean throne, yet in most iterations he is challenged by his maniacal half-brother Orm, who tries to usurp the throne and gains the name Ocean Master in the process.
Throughout the 1960’s Aquaman developed a reputation of having feeble or useless powers due to his portrayal in the animated series Super Friends. Aquaman’s powers were used as minor plot fixes rather than being a pivotal member of the team, he was more of a joke. Until recently, most audience’s perception of him was less than flattering.
Now that Jason Momoa has taken over the role and successfully revitalized the character with James Wan’s Aquaman film, most audience see him as a legitimate hero and a force to be reckoned with. Fans can look forward to Aquaman: King of Atlantis as it offers another fresh take on the ruler of Atlantis.
