South Side, the HBO Max comedy series created by brothers Bashir Salahuddin (Snatched) and Sultan Salahuddin (Black-ish) as well as Diallo Riddle (The Last O.G.), has been renewed for a third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios.
Both brothers star in the series along with their sister, Zuri (Sherman’s Showcase). The Salahuddin’s are not the only family to appear on the comedy series together, as brothers Quincy Young (Vitamin Z) and newcomer Kareme Young also have starring roles. The two families originate from Chicago, Illinois, where the show is based. Riddle also stars in South Side, but his role wasn’t as prominent until season two. The show also stars Chandra Russell (Downtown Girls), Nefetari Spencer (Ted 2), and Will A. Miles (The Chris Gethard Show).
Bashir Salahuddin and Riddle released a joint statement via THR, where they expressed their excitement for their next season.
“We are blessed. We get to make a show starring our family and friends about a city we love,” Salahuddin and Riddle said. “South Side finds joy in the extraordinary adventures of ordinary folks. We challenge ourselves to make every episode a unique and unexpected journey. We have no clue where our characters will find themselves in season three and we couldn’t be more excited to find out.”
Season one of South Side was aired on Comedy Central, but moved to HBO Max in 2020 after Comedy Central opted to focus more on animation and topical shows over live-action scripted series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Suzanna Makkos, HBO Max’s Executive VP of Original Comedy and Adult Animation, also released a statement via THR on the renewal of South Side.
“To be able to bring this world and these characters to life has been a true joy,” Makkos said. “A lot of people say that South Side is about the American dream, and the stories that Bashir and Diallo have crafted completely embody that dream with both razor-sharp humor and refreshing cultural commentary. I think I speak for everyone here at HBO Max when I say, ‘It’s time for the percolator.’”
