HBO Max just released a new trailer for the upcoming Big Ban Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe. The series is set to depart from a sitcom about a gang of lovable nerds to a multi-dimensional sci-fi comedy. The comic book store owner, Stuart, must unite with old and new characters to stop the apocalypse. Watch the trailer below.
The official longline for the series is as follows: “Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from “The Big Bang Theory.” As the title implies, things don’t go well.”
Stuart Fails To Save The Universe differs in both genre and style, moving from a multi-camera setup like The Big Bang Theory to a single-camera format. The move is likely to give the show a slightly more serious tone. The trailer still delivers plenty of jokes, but this time fans can expect action as well. In the trailer when asked about a plan Stuart say’s “I don’t really have one I’m kind of new to the action genre.”
The Big Bang Theory was a massive success, running for 12 years and 12 seasons. HBO will attempt to translate that success to the modern streaming world. Stuart Fails To Save The Universe is the third spin-off set within the Big Bang Universe. The first was Young Sheldon which then spawned a spin-off of a spin-off in George & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Stuart is played by Kevin Sussman (Better Call Saul, Lessons In Chemistry). Additional cast members include Lauren Lapkus as Denise (Jurassic World, Good Girls), Brian Pohsen (The Devil’s Rejects, Knights Of Badassdom) as Bert, and John Ross Bowie (Speechless, Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Kripkie. According to mxdwn, Will Wheaton (Stand By Me, Star Trek: the Next Generation) is also set for a cameo, as he did 17 times on the original series.
The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers include Chuck Lorre (Two And A Half Men, The Kominsky Method), Zak Penn, (Ready Plater One, The Avengers) Bill Prady (Related, Drama & Greg), and Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, Happy Gilmore 2). Newacheck will also direct several episodes.
