In this modern world of oversharing, social media gives celebrities an even bigger spotlight and sometimes that spotlight can turn into a nightmare. HBO Max released its first trailer for the upcoming drama series I Hate Suzie which chronicles an actress dealing with the aftermath of her phone being hacked via Indiewire.
I Hate Suzie is a British series starring Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful) as semi-famous actress Suzie. Her life gets turned upside down when her phone is hacked and the scandalous content is shared with the public.
Indiewire picked up the official synopsis released by HBO Max: “Suzie Pickles (Billie Piper), a star on the wane, has her whole life upended when her phone is hacked and a photo of her in an extremely compromising position is released for the whole world to see. This excruciatingly honest show follows the various stages of Suzie’s trauma episode by episode, through Shock, Denial, Fear, Shame, Bargaining, Guilt, Anger and Acceptance as Suzie and her best friend and manager Naomi try to hold her life, career, and marriage together in the face of being exposed for who she truly is. But who the hell even is that?” The series runs a total of eight episodes.
Lucy Prebble (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) is the mastermind behind the project, serving as a writer for the series. This is her second collaboration with HBO, as she also wrote and co-executive produced the mega successful dark comedy drama Succession. With I Hate Suzie, that dark wit returns as the actress must find some kind of silver lining while dealing with the huge breach of privacy.
The trailer released on Monday is chaotic and fast paced as Suzie runs through the emotional gauntlet of having her private life shared with the public. Dealing with problems from all corners of life, she balances being a mother, wife, and professional actress all at once. Accompanied by the Nina Simone song “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” Suzie goes through the motions of accepting the onslaught of public humiliation and attempts to move on.
Along with giving viewers a first look at the series, the trailer also announced that it will be coming to HBO Max November 19. I Hate Suzie’s eight episodes will be released in its entirety on the premiere date. The series originally aired on the British channel Sky Atlantic on August 27.
