A series adaptation of Stacy Willingham’s debut novel A Flicker in the Dark will be adapted into a series for HBO Max, hailing from Emma Stone (La La Land) and Dave McCary (Brigsby Bear), according to Variety. The novel will be published in the United States in January 2022.
A Flicker in the Dark follows Chloe Davis, who, at 12-years-old, discovered that her father had confessed to the murders of six teenage girls in their Louisiana town. Two decades later, Chloe becomes a psychologist in Baton Rouge whose past comes back to haunt her when local teens begin to disappear.
Morgan Gould (The Dan Nicholl Show) will adapt the book for HBO Max with A24 and Fruit Tree alongside Stone and McCary. Meanwhile, as announced in December, Stone is expected to star in and executive produce the Showtime comedy titled The Curse, hailing from Nathan Fielder (Nathan For You) and Benny Safdie (Good Time), who will star opposite Stone. The actress won the Oscar for best actress in 2017 for her role in La La Land, which she starred opposite Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love), and has been nominated three times for Oscars for her roles in The Favourite and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
