Another 80s sitcom revival series has, unfortunately, bit the dust. TV Line reports HBO Max has canceled its Head of the Class reboot after one season. The series was based on the original ABC sitcom of the same name that aired from 1986 to 1991.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Head of the Class,” HBO Max stated via TV Line. “We were grateful to work with Bill, Amy, and Seth to bring back such an iconic series, and we thank them and the terrific cast for their hard work and dedication.”
According to TV Line, the series starred Isabella Gomez as a new teacher tasked with guiding a class of wiz kids in life lessons. Gomez is most known for her role in another sitcom reboot, One Day at a Time, which aired for three seasons on Netflix and one on Pop TV. Gomez was joined by Cougar Town‘s Christa Miller, who played the school’s principal, and original series star, Robin Givens (Riverdale, Ambitions) who reprised her role as Darlene.
The series full cast included Jorge Diaz (The 33, The Long Road Home), Dior Goodjohn (Glee), Brandon Severs (Days of Our Lives, The Whispers), Gavin Lewis (Little Fires Everywhere, The Prince of Peoria), Jolie Hoang Rappaport (Watchmen, Just Add Magic), newcomer Adrian Matthew Escalona, and Katie Beth Hall (Home Sweet Home Alone, Bull). The show was executive produced by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso), Amy Pocha (Bad Teacher), and Seth Cohen (Undateable).
Head of the Class is just one example of many former series receiving new life in the streaming era of television. As more viewers are opting out of the traditional linear experience, networks have pivoted to classic IP to help boost content for their non-linear platforms. NBC’s Peacock has successfully revisited Bayside High for two seasons in the Saved by the Bell reboot. And Paramount+ has greenlighted a Fraiser reboot, with star Kelsey Grammer attached to return.
All ten episodes of Head of the Class are available to stream on HBO Max.
