Barry, HBO’s dark comedy created by Alec Berg (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Bill Hader (Trainwreck), will finally return on Sunday, April 24, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hader also stars in the show along with Stephen Root (Office Space), Sarah Goldberg (The Dark Knight Rises), Anthony Carrigan (Gotham), and Henry Winkler (Night Shift).
The series had been off the air since May 2019 as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the show to shut down production, according to THR. Season three of Barry will air on HBO as well as stream on HBO Max.
Hader discussed the direction the show will take during season three at the Television Critics Association’s virtual press tour session on Tuesday.
“Season three, more than anything, shows the ramifications of [Barry’s violence],” Hader said, per THR. “Even more bad things happen. Mostly bad.”
Berg also commented on what to expect in season three.
“What’s interesting: All of the wreckage of seasons one and two that Barry had to do to keep the plates spinning… all goes back to his decision to become an actor. I really enjoy the fact that everything that happens in the show is a consequence of Barry wanting a better life and every bit of that better life he’s trying to achieve has led to all this chaos,” Berg explained, per THR.
HBO also released an official description for the upcoming season, THR reported, stating: “Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry (Hader) is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season three finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.”
Barry has earned 30 Emmy nominations and six wins. The dark comedy’s six wins include awards for Hader, who won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series in 2018 and 2019, as well as Winkler, who won Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series in 2018.
