HBO Announces Season Two Premiere Date for ‘His Dark Materials’

The HBO original series His Dark Materials is set to begin its second season run on November 16, according to an HBO press release. The upcoming second installment of the fantasy drama series will premiere on HBO at 9 PM EST in addition to being available for streaming on the new Warner Media platform, HBO Max. The series is adapted for television by Jack Thorne (Skins, Shameless) from the novels under the same name written by Philip Pullman (The Golden Compass). The series is executive produced by the likes of Dan McCulloch (Endeavour), Tom Hooper (EastEnders, John Adams), Carolyn Blackwood (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Pullman, Thorne, and many more.

His Dark Materials centers on an alternate world that features humans beginning accompanied by the manifestations of a human soul in which an orphan Lyra uncovers dark and mysterious secrets about the leaders of the new world. The second season will follow Lyra aiming to reunite her new acquaintance Will with his father. The cast includes the likes of Dafne Keen (Logan) as Lyra, Amir Wilson (The Letter for the King) as Will Parry, Anne-Marie Duff (Sex Education, Shameless) as Ma Costa, Ruth Wilson (The Lone ranger, Luther) as Marisa Coulter, James Cosmo (Game of Thrones, Get Duked!) as Farder Coram, Clarke Peters (The Wire), Will Keen (The Crown), Gary Lewis (Gangs of New York, Outlander), James McAvoy (Split, Wanted), Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Sherlock), and many more.

Despite McAvoy’s role in the first season, he will not reprise his role of Lord Asriel in the second installment. Originally, an episode of the second season was supposed to be centered on Lord Asriel following his actions in the first season. After murdering Lyra’s friend Roger, McAvoy’s character was to be followed in a standalone episode for the season. This standalone feature was supposed to be filmed in March, but was, unfortunately, was cut due to COVID-19 which resulted in shortening the season, according to Radio Times.

Currently, His Dark Materials has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming season but has yet to release a full-length official one. Television fans can check out the teaser trailer below:
