Yesterday, HBO and Sky announced a two-season order for the legal anthology thriller series, War. According to the official press release, Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) and Sienna Miller (American Sniper, Anatomy of a Scandal) will star in the London-set first season from George Kay (Lupin, Hijack).
“I am excited to be working with Sky and HBO – two homes for bold, ambitious storytelling – and our brilliant production team. WAR is a legal drama full of double crossing, scandal, twists and betrayal. The kind of TV show that made me want to write TV shows,” Kay said about the series via the press release.
The series follows two rival law firms, Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne, as they support opposite parties in a landmark divorce case. While both sides are determined to be victorious, the case takes a turn as each side takes desperate measures to win, inside and outside of the courtroom.
West has been cast as tech titan Morgan Henderson with Miller playing his estranged wife, actress Carla Duval. Joining them are Phoebe Fox (Eye in the Sky, The Great) as Serena Byrne and James McArdle (Mary Queen of Scots, ’71) as Nicholas Taylor, the husband-and-wife duo that leads one of the law firms. Over at Cathcarts, Nina Sosanya (Love, Actually, Five Days) and Pip Torrens (Joy, Reneade Nell) are Beatirce “Queen Bea” Ubosi and St. John Smallwood, respectively. Archie Reneaux (Alien: Romulus, Upgraded) plays lawyer Jonathan “Johnny” Warren.
In addition to Sky and HBO, War is co-produced by New Pictures and Observatory Pictures. Kay also serves as executive producer with Willow Grylls (Des, The Missing), New Pictures’ Matt Sandord (The Long Shadow) and Sky’s Ben Taylor (Sex Education, Catastrophe), Susan Breen (The Woman in the Wall, Bad Sisters), Andrea Dewsbury (I Hate Suizie, Waterloo Road) and Megan Spanjian (Atomic, Waco).
“We are thrilled to be working with George, Ben, Willow and team on WAR. The show is ambitious and provocative, brimming with unforgettable characters. It challenges the notions of power, identity, and success. We are proud to partner with New Pictures and HBO on this distinctly modern drama,” Sky’s Executive Director of Original Scripted, Meghan Lyvers, said in a statement via the press release.
“George Kay has created an incredibly compelling cast of characters who will have audiences rooting for them, despite the underhand tactics, dirty tricks and win at all cost mentality they bring to battle against each other in – and out – of court. We are incredibly pleased to be trusted by Sky and HBO with a two series order to bring their stories to viewers around the world,” commented Grylls, EP and CEO of New Pictures via the press release.
“We’ve long admired George Kay’s exceptional work and it’s a privilege to bring him and his team to HBO for this wild and wicked examination of the brutal battlefield that is divorce,” stated HBO’s EVP of Programming and Head of Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, in the press release. “An inspired fusion of realism and satire, viewers are in store for gripping storytelling at its very best.”
The series War will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the States, and stream on HBO Max in Australia. It will air on Sky and stream on NOW/WOW for viewers in the UK, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. NBCUniversal will handle additional international distribution.
