According to Deadline, HBO and Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage (Face/Off, Leaving Las Vegas) have been in talks about the portrayal of the lead in the series True Detective for season five. Cage will possibly play Detective Henry Logan, a new detective in the series. The new season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Cage has been in discussions about this character for quite some time. As of now, it is unclear whether or not the deal will close. HBO has not made an official comment as of yet.  Interestingly, Jodie Foster (A Private Life, Alok), another Oscar winner, also took a long time to close her deal with HBO for True Detective season four.

Deadline also mentioned that the filming for season five is scheduled to start in 2026, with the premiere on HBO in 2027. Matthew McConaughey (Mud, Born To Run) and Woody Harrelson (Cheers, Doc Hollywood) costarred in the original first season. Colin Farrell (Ballad of a Small Player, The Beautiful Game), Rachel McAdams (Game Night, Disobedience), and Taylor Kitsch (John Carter, Battleship) were leads in season two. Season three had Mahershala Ali (Blade, Wildwood) and Stephen Dorff (Blade, Somewhere) as the detectives.

The fourth installment, True Detective: Night Country, starred Foster and Kali Reis (Rebuilding, Catch the Fair One) as detectives. Foster portrayed a detective who uncovered truths buried beneath the Arctic ice when eight male researchers mysteriously disappeared in Alaska. Deadline noted that Foster won an Emmy for her work on this show.

In December, Lopez told the New York Post that “there’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” according to Deadline.

Up until now, Cage has exclusively starred in films. True Detective would be starting after his first series on Prime Video, Spider-Noir.
