The wonderful Hayley Atwell will be returning to television as Agent Carter, just perhaps not how fans would like
Comicbookmovie.com reports that Hayley Atwell will be reprising her role as Agent Carter in the upcoming series Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Secret Wars is an animated Marvel series on DisneyXD, meaning Atwell will be voicing the character she first appeared as in Captain America: The First Avenger. After the first Captain America film, Agent Peggy Carter became widely loved by fans which prompted Marvel to create Marvel’s Agent Carter on ABC. Sadly, however, after two short seasons Carter’s solo series was cancelled by the network.
Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars is the new title for the fourth season of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble on DisneyXD. In Secret Wars, the Avengers will get caught up in some time-travel, which is how Agent Carter and Howard Stark will team-up with Captain American and Iron Man to defeat the villain Kang the Conqueror.
While I’m sure most of us were hoping to see Hayley Atwell return in a live-action capacity, we will take as much Agent Carter as we can get.
In May, ABC announced Agent Carter was canceled after running for two seasons. The first season of Agent Carter was successful on ABC and even warranted a second season, despite being marketed as a limited series. The second season, however, was not very successful. Taking into account people who watched Agent Carter through means such as DVR, the second season finale, despite the dramatic cliffhanger, only drew in 4.3 million views.
Despite not receiving the viewership ABC hoped for, it is unclear why Agent Carter was not renewed for a third installment. But even before Agent Carter was cancelled, Hayley Atwell had already signed on for ABC’s procedural drama Conviction, which just premiered.
In an attempt to save Agent Carter and get a third season, fans started campaign for Netflix to pick up the series. This wouldn’t be the first time an online streaming service saved a network series from being cancelled just as Hulu picked up The Mindy Project and Yahoo adopted Community. Netflix seemed like the logical new home for Agent Carter due to their ever growing collection of Marvel series. However, Netflix opted against picking up Agent Carter and instead chose to focus on original programming.
