British actor Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince, Shrek 2) and actress Hayley Atwell (Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Black Mirror) have joined the second season of the Disney+ comedy/drama Rivals, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Lily Ford. Both stars will fill supporting roles in the continued adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s 1988 novel, which premiered its first season in October of last year.
For readers across the pond (or otherwise unfamiliar with the series), Rivals follows a tug-of-war between British nobleman Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) over the establishment of an independent television network in the British countryside during the 1980s. What begins as a battle between businessmen soon escalates into a full-on feud with deadly consequences for both sides, along with their loved ones.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Atwell will portray Helen Gordon, the ex-wife of Campbell-Black and the mother of his two children Marcus and Tabitha (two roles which have yet to be announced). Everett will play Gordon’s new husband, Malise, who has his own history with Campbell-Black as his former show-jumping instructor. Atwell is notably replacing Aanastasia Griffith (Trauma, Deep State), who cameoed as Helen in two episodes of the show’s first season.
The increased emphasis season two seems to be placing on the interior life of Rupert Campbell-Black makes sense, considering Jilly Cooper’s original Rivals novel acted as the second chapter in the Rutshire Chronicles, an eleven-book series largely centered on the nobleman’s romantic pursuits (via Elle). Given the vast amount of existing material its writers have to work with, it might seem natural that season two will draw inspiration from the next book in the series, Polo — but doing so would bring about a number of complications, not least of which is the fact that Polo is largely disconnected from the characters of Rivals until its conclusion.
While showrunner Dominic Treadwell-Collins and creative director Alexander Lamb didn’t offer any juicy details on the larger plot of Rivals’ second season, they did take the opportunity to welcome Atwell and Everett to the network. “We are utterly thrilled to have Hayley and Rupert join us to play Jilly Cooper’s legendary characters Helen and Malise Gordon,” the directors shared in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Alongside our other new wonderful actors and truly brilliant returning cast, Rivals series two absolutely showcases the best of British and Irish talent. With further exciting guest stars to be announced, we can’t wait for everyone to see what’s next for the residents of Rutshire.”
Season two of Rivals will premiere on Hulu in the United States (or on Disney+ in the United Kingdom) at an undisclosed date. Season one is available now in its entirety on Disney+.
