As Marvel delves deep into Phase Four, fans continue to see pivotal moments of the MCU being expanded on its Disney+ series. The first two episodes of Hawkeye were released Wednesday, and the opening scene gave fans new perspective of the Battle of New York from the 2012 film, The Avengers — only this time from the perspective of a young Kate Bishop. Director Rhys Thomas spoke with The Wrap on recreating the iconic Avengers scene.
In the first few minutes of the series, Kate eavesdrops on an argument between her parents, Elanor and Derek (played by Vera Farmiga and Brian d’Arcy James, respectively). Minutes later, Kate is struggling through her apartment as it gets damaged by the Chitauri Invasion, and she catches a glimpse of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in action.
Thomas sat down with The Wrap to talk about how the team recreated the Battle of New York scene for the Disney+ series. “The whole thing was completely done brand new, it was all new off the showroom floor, except there was one moment of Jeremy leaping off the building that we [used],” he told The Wrap. “But we also had to shoot the other side. So we had our double recreate the leap as well. I had this great chance to look at dailies from the original ‘Avengers,’ which was kind of cool.”
This is not the first time that the MCU revisited the Battle of New York. In 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the opening scene saw Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) cleaning up the city with Damage Control after the invasion. In Avengers: Endgame, the surviving Avengers of Thanos’s snap revisited the Battle of New York to retrieve the Infinity Stones there, where Loki took the Tesseract and ended up at the TVA.
Loki director Kate Herron spoke to Insider on how they recreated the Avengers battle. She spoke about how they re-used the footage from Avengers: Endgame and re-tailored it for the series by adding close-up shots of Tom Hiddleston (Thor).
New episodes of Hawkeye will air every Wednesday on Disney+.
