Gen X fans of the 1980s animated series Jem and the Holograms received news about the show as it marked its 40th anniversary. Last week, during San Diego Comic-Con, Hasbro announced the release of a Jem and the Holograms album featuring six original songs from the series.
According to the press release, original voice actor and musician Britta Phillips (Marriage Story, White Noise) re-recorded the songs with an all-female-led production team and band. The tracklist includes the show’s original theme song, “She’s Got The Power”, “Like A Dream”, I Got My Eye On You”, “Only the Beginning”, and “Truly Outrageous.”
While the album was released on July 25, the festivities began the day before as Phillips held a surprise performance for fans. She was accompanied by the G.I. Joe-influenced band, Cold Slither, at the popular music venue, Brick by Brick.
Running for three seasons, Jem and the Holograms was a musical animated series that followed Jerrica Benton, a music label owner who cosplayed as Jem and led an all-female band at night. Benton was joined by her younger sister, Kimber, who served as the group’s main songwriter and keyboardist. The other multicultural band members included Aja on guitar, Shana on synth drums and bass, and Carmen on synth drums.
The secret to their success was a holographic computer, titled Synergy, that Benton used to transform into her alter-ego. Inheriting the technology from her late father, Jerrica fought to protect it from adversaries, namely Eric Raymond and a rival group, the Misfits. Raymond served as manager of both groups, but secretly sought to end Jem as he felt he was the rightful owner of the label, Starlight Music. The Misfits were a foursome led by rival singer Pizzazz and three other members: Stormer, Jetta, and Roxy.
While the series only lasted three years, its impact on the culture was evident, even receiving a live-action film adaptation in 2015, directed by Wicked‘s Jon M. Chu.
In addition to the album, Hasbro has collaborated with other vendors to release special edition merchandise. New dolls are available through The Loyal Subjects, and a line of accessories has been released with Loungefly.
Jem and the Holograms is available to stream on Plex and Tubi. Stream the new album here and purchase the vinyl.
