Grey’s Anatomy will see two staple characters exit the show, according to Deadline. Kevin McKidd (It Ends With Us, Brave) and Kim Raver (24, The Braid) will say goodbye to the ER and move on to other projects. Their two characters have shared the screen for much of their time on Grey’s Anatomy as their plots have been linked via either romance or friendship.
Those who work on the series have known about this exit of the two stars for more than a month now. Although the show has not yet been renewed, the series is expected to continue for at least one more season, albeit on a reduced episode count and budget.
Raver and McKid’s exit, as two of the longest-standing cast members in the series, does help cut costs; producers on the series have assured fans that the decision was entirely character and story-driven. McKidd has been at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital longer than anyone besides the original cast members. He was cast in the series for season five, making him an eighteen-season veteran of the series. Raver entered the series not long after, in season six.
McKid shared his feelings about his time on the medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years, via Deadline.
Raver also expressed a fondness for her character, “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” via Deadline.
Although the actors have no plans to return, characters often return to Grey Sloan. “While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye. We are endlessly grateful for the years, the artistry, and the memories they’ve given to the show and we look forward to cheering them on in whatever comes next,” shared current showrunner, Meg Marinis.
This marks the third time in the series that two core cast members have left together. Shonda Rhimes (Bridgerton, Scandal), executive producer and creator of the series, voiced her appreciation for the two actors. “Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen- two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.
Kevin and Kim bring extraordinary talent, nuance and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions leave an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them both and to see them shine.
While we will all miss seeing them in the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial each day, I am excited to witness where Kim’s and Kevin’s journeys will take them in the future,” via Deadline.
