According to Deadline, Adolescence may be in for a surprise second season. At the Golden Globes, Stephen Graham (This Is England, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) confirmed that he and co-creator Jack Throne (The Hack, Toxic Town) are currently contemplating a second season. The show was originally planned as a limited series.
Just after taking home the award for male actor in a limited series, anthology, or TV movie, Graham was prodded about the possibility of a second season. “I cannot answer that question because it’s somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and Jack’s mind, and we’ll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned.” Graham said via Deadline.
Deadline has reported that in April of last year, Plan-B presidents Dede Gardner (12 Years A Slave, Preparation For The Next Life) and Jeremy Kleiner (If Beale Street Could Talk, 12 Years A Slave) floated the idea of continuing the series past its initial limited series format. They stated they were speaking to director Philip Baratini about the “next iteration”. Gardener hoped to “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive,” though she would not expand further.
According to Deadline, the first season stars Graham in the role of Eddie Miller, who must come to grips with the fact that his son Jamie has committed a heinous act. Jamie is played by actor Owen Cooper, who won the award for supporting actor in his debut role. The series was nominated for five Golden Globes in total. Erin Doherty (The Crown, Reawakening) also collected the award for supporting actress for her part as therapist Briony Artison.
Deadline has reported that Adolescence has enjoyed quite the award season. At the Emmys, it was nominated for 13 awards, winning eight of them. Commercially, it became Netflix’s second most-watched English series of all time, being viewed 146 million times.
