Earlier this week the nominees for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced for both film and television categories. Though a wide variety of films and shows were nominated, audiences have noticed a few key trends in the nominations, some of which were cause for concern among some viewers.
Most notably, no women were nominated for the Best Directing category for film. This is notable because 2019 has been a year marked by a significant increase in women-directed hit movies, including popular films like A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, The Farewell, Little Women, and Hustlers. In fact, in the 77 year long history of the Golden Globe awards, only five women have ever been nominated for the Best Directing category. Film fans took to Twitter following the nominations to express their frustration:

So…no nominations for Lupita Nyong’o, no nominations for ‘Us’, no nominations for ‘Euphoria’, no nominations for ‘When They See Us,’ and no female directors nominated…
And we’re supposed to be excited for the Golden Globes? Nah. pic.twitter.com/KWe3vdqUq3
